Hi, just wondering what you experienced Dobie owners think of the dressing on my 10 week pup. He just had surgery today. I was looking at a lot of pics on here and noticed the ears are left out of the cup. Our vet wrapped over them and around his chin. She also put the neck cone on him which is frustrating him badly. Would it be so bad to take it off? I think she said he would need to wear it for a few weeks.

I'm not from the U.S and we don't crop here, but from what I have seen around the forum, fresh crops are always left exposed to air until the cuts have healed, then they are posted. If a fresh wound is all wrapped up like that it won't get a good chance to heal and might get infected :( What I usually see/hear is either the ears are glued to a cup on top of the head (with cut edges exposed) or the ears are just glued on top of the head, no need to be posting until the ears are totally healed. Also I believe most people don't use an E-collar, just tell your pup off he scratches and maybe tape some socks onto his hind feet.

I have seen the sock method. Never used it. Even though I think they look super cute! Are your pups back nails trimmed all the way back? If so you can remove the cone. It helps keep them from using their nails to snag stitches. I do know you cannot leave that sock on non stop. Or the ears can heal to it and OUCH when you finally take it off. I will see if I can find the link to the sock site. If I can I will post it.

Dr. Main in Michigan sends your puppies home like that!! In my experience I have had both. I would take the sock off and live on the cone especially at night time when they sleep that way they cannot itch out the stitches. Then during the day time I just leave the sock on so it protects the stitches but yet the puppy can play and live some what of a normal life. At least for the first week so they can heal a bit.

Bogart had the sock on for 5 days I think it was (geez how quickly one forgets), but we never used the collar. The sock is on to help protect when dog scratches. I personally think the collar is overkill, and makes life too miserable. Someone asked if the nail had been trimmed WAY back while pup was under.... that would help protect also.

Hey, i was wondering how your dog's ears turned out?? i'm an industrial designer and for my thesis i'm actually designing a product to help out with the molding of the dog's ears after a crop. i see the dressing your vet used doesn't really help the wound breath, how did it go? any infections??

hope to hear from you soon!

I think that this could ROCK! I keep looking at whatever metal they make bendy eyeglass ear pieces out of that has memory and returns to it's shape... I keep wondering why there couldn't be glue-on braces made out of that stuff for ears... puppies could sommersault and crash into walls without jamming anything painfully into their heads, and their ears would pop right back into place. Seriously, it is high time someone did this!

Oh! Congrats on the puppy, too!
